LandCruiser 76 vs 79 Series: What's Different When You Kit Them Out?

The short answer

The 76 and 79 Series share the same engine (1VD-FTV V8 diesel), the same chassis platform, and the same front sheet metal — so most bull bars and front-end protection interchange. Where they diverge is behind the B-pillar: the 76 is a five-door wagon, the 79 is a two-door single-cab (or dual-cab) ute. That means rock sliders, side steps, canopies, and rear-step tow bars are body-length-specific and don't cross over.

Same platform, different bodies

Toyota's 70-series LandCruiser range shares a common chassis and drivetrain across the 76, 78 (troop carrier) and 79 (ute) body styles. All three run:

  • The 4.5L turbo-diesel V8 (1VD-FTV) in current NZ-spec models
  • A ladder-frame chassis rated for serious payload
  • Live-axle front and rear suspension with coil (front) and leaf (rear) springs
  • The same recovery point and winch mount interfaces on the chassis rails

For anything mounting to the front of the chassis — bull bars, winches, driving lights — you can generally treat 76 and 79 as interchangeable. Rockarmor's chassis-specific bars for the 70-series fit either body style.

Where fitment diverges

Every accessory that mounts to the body or references body length is different between the two.

Rock sliders and side steps

  • 76 wagon: four-door body length. Side sliders run past the rear passenger door and finish before the rear wheel arch. Rockarmor slider length ~1900mm per side.
  • 79 single-cab ute: two-door body length only. Sliders finish well before the rear tray. Length ~1400mm per side.
  • 79 dual-cab ute: four-door but the second row is a smaller "crew cab" body. Sliders are shorter than the 76 wagon (~1650mm per side).

Point being: the sliders are NOT interchangeable. Ordering 76-length sliders for a 79 will leave you with an overhang. Ordering 79-length for a 76 wagon leaves the rear passenger door unprotected.

Rear step tow bars

  • 76 wagon: integrated rear step tow bar mounts to the rear body cross-member with the wagon tailgate profile
  • 79 single/dual cab ute: mounts to the ute chassis behind the tray. Different mount geometry, different tow-ball drop, integrates with reversing sensors differently

Canopies

  • 76 wagon: wagon body — no canopy fitment (the wagon roof IS the enclosure)
  • 79 single/dual cab ute: canopy mounts to the deck rails of the factory ute tray. Multiple Rockarmor and third-party canopy options available. Length varies by cab configuration (single-cab has a longer deck, dual-cab shorter).

Roof racks

  • 76 wagon: the wagon roofline has factory gutters that most roof rack systems clip into. Full-length rack setups are the norm.
  • 79 ute: cab roof is much shorter — only cab-length roof racks work over the cab. Rear tray-mounted racks or roof-of-canopy racks handle the larger loads.

What DOES interchange

For the record — anything that mounts to the shared engineering is the same across 76 and 79:

  • Front bull bars (GT Hoop, GT Hoopless, Elite, Premium variants)
  • Bash plates and skid plates for the front diff, transfer case, and fuel tank
  • Winch mount interfaces
  • Snorkels (both use the same right-hand-side A-pillar route)
  • Suspension components (springs, shocks, control arms)
  • Driving light mounts on the bull bar
  • Front-end recovery points

Common build examples

76 wagon touring build

  • GT Hoop bull bar (76 fitment)
  • Winch + recovery points
  • Front bash plate + transfer case protection
  • Rock sliders (four-door wagon length)
  • Rear step tow bar (wagon-specific)
  • Full-length roof rack
  • Snorkel

79 ute expedition build

  • GT Hoop or Elite bull bar (79 fitment)
  • Winch + recovery points
  • Front + transfer case bash plates
  • Rock sliders (single-cab OR dual-cab length depending on body)
  • Rockarmor canopy on tray
  • Roof rack over cab OR on canopy
  • Rear step tow bar (ute-specific)
  • Snorkel

Ordering — what to check

When you're speccing a 70-series build with Rockarmor, always confirm:

  1. Year range — the 76/78/79 platform has run since 2007. Some early models have different mount interfaces than 2016+ update models.
  2. Body type — 76 wagon / 78 troop carrier / 79 single-cab / 79 dual-cab. This decides everything behind the front axle.
  3. Bumper-cut or full-bar replacement — front-end protection comes in both configurations; check which suits your winch and accessory plans.

FAQ

Will a 76 bull bar fit a 79? Yes — the front sheet metal and chassis mount interfaces are identical for the 70-series V8 platform. Same bar SKU covers both.

Will 76 rock sliders fit a 79 single-cab? No — different lengths. 76 wagon sliders are much longer.

Do I need different suspension for a 76 vs 79? Same base platform, but load requirements differ — the 76 wagon carries a fixed payload (passengers + luggage), the 79 ute carries variable load (tray + canopy + gear). Spring rates and shock tuning may differ by load spec, not by body style.

Does the same snorkel fit both? Yes — the A-pillar snorkel route is shared across 76/78/79.
